India on December 14, 2020 hosted the sixth edition of the India-EU Cyber Dialogue where both the sides held discussion on the importance of multilateral and regional cooperation on stability in cyberspace. Both the sides held to expedite the discussions on the connectivity partnership and strengthen bilateral cooperation in digital domain (cyber security and AI).

Data security is a mechanism to ascertain that data is confidential, accurate reliable and available only with authorised access.  It includes ethical standards and safeguards to prevent any illegal mis-happening from a third-party source.

It focuses on the protection of data from malicious attacks and prevents exploitation of any stolen data. Network security, encryption and access control etc, come under data security.

On the other hand, data privacy is an extension of data security and focuses on the rights of the individuals, purpose of data collection with privacy preferences. It deals with the proper handling, processing, storage and usage of personal information.

In case of password protected accounts- while the password ensures security, the terms of privacy outlined by the particular platform while signing would dictate how data being entrusted to the concerned platform will be used.

Data privacy methods are similar to netizens such as the usage of multi factor authentication, being cautious of the IoT(internet of things) devices, and odd request pop ups.

The Indian government urges the global tech giants like WhatsApp and Facebook to aware people about the sensitivity of data who are vulnerable to surveillance. However, even the personal privacy laws in India provokes a certain kind of surveillance fear in the minds of citizens.
